Editing

As a freelance writer and public relations journalist, I have also had the opportunity to do an extensive amount of editing. In the writing career field, editing is equally important to writing. When you study the art and business of writing you always also study editing! I have worked freelance and by contract as an editorial assistant, a magazine editor, a proofreader, and a book editor. Here are some details about the editing projects I have worked on through the years.

2015-2017
My most recent editing projects have been books, which has been really exciting! I was blessed to meet Dr. Kim Logan-Nowlin at a women's retreat in 2014, where I had been randomly asked to drive her to the airport on my way home that day. As we talked in the car, she told me about her work as a marriage and family therapist, professor, speaker, and writer. I told her about my work as a writer and editor and stay-at-home Mom. She said she was looking for an editor. We exchanged contact information and I started working for her right away to edit her book, Marriage Living With the Unexplainable.

After completing this editing project, Dr. Kim referred me to her friends, Corey and Natasha Feimster, who needed an editor for their upcoming book, Leave Me Alone . . . But, Don't Leave Me!!!

After completing the book editing project for the Feimsters, I edited the Nowlin's book, Intensive Care: Can My Marriage Survive or Not?

2015-2016
From 2015-2016, I served as managing editor for American Indian Living magazine, which was edited by Pat Humprey and published bi-annually by the Southwestern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in collaboration with the Assembly of First Nations and the National Congress of American Indians. The magazine was designed to enhance the health and wholeness of the indigenous populations in North America. It was a true honor to be involved with this amazing magazine! I planned the placement of articles and collaborated with the layout/design editor on sidebar and image usage.

2009-2016
In 2009, I served as freelance content editor and proofreader for Pat Humprey, who was director of communications at the Southwestern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, and in that role served as editor of the Southwestern Union Record magazine. I edited articles for the magazine for many years, and from 2014-2016 I served as proofreader (offsite) for the magazine.

The Southwestern Union Record is a 52-page monthly publication distributed to members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. It contains editorials news reports, feature stories, obituaries, and classifieds relevant to members and ministries taking place in the Southwestern Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

2003-2015
In 2003, I met Pat Humphrey, a communication expert who worked in communications but who was also a very active freelance writer. She was editing a publication called Cornerstone Youth Resource, which later became Insight Youth Resource. At that time, I joined Pat as a freelance writer and her editorial assistant.

Later, in 2012, she recommended me for the position of editor as she had decided to no longer serve as editor. I was editor of Insight Youth Resource magazine from 2012-2015.
